Wireless provider Cellcom along with other carriers have begun to offer emergency alerts for free within certain geographic specifications. This offer by the wireless provider is in partnership with federal agencies.

Currently the wireless provider is offering the geographic specific free alerts on the Motorola Milestone X2.However the De Pere wireless provider is expected to make available the service to other such devices as and when they are brought into the market by manufacturers. According to the chief technical officer at Cellcom, Jim Lienau, with mobiles available with almost everyone, anyone can now see an alert while on the move and get to know the reason for the same.

The federal agencies wanted the alerts to be available right down to the county level. Because of this initiative the alerts can now originate from national public safety organizations at the national, state or local levels. Mobile users for the geographical area concerned will get a 90 character SMS which would have a specific ringtone and vibration.

The alerts are also categorized into, presidential alerts, natural calamity alerts, and Amber Alerts for missing children or those in danger. Phones having the facility to receive such alerts would have a Wireless Emergency Alert logo marked on the box.
According to Cellcom, the wireless provider had opted for this program for more than three years now and was one of the first to do so.

The wireless service provider, Verizon Communications (VZ), is expected to report its Q1 earnings by the 20th of April 2012. The lack of a new IPhone is expected to cause ripples across the sector with very few highly valued "postpaid "customers subscribing to their services. The wireless service providers are keen to sign up higher spending customers with monthly contracts rather than "prepaid "minute buyers. The overall saturation of the market in smart phones and the non presence of a new iPhone are adding to the woes of wireless service providers and the industry as a whole.

AT&T and T-mobile use the GSM standards while other wireless service providers in the US, with the exception of TracFone, use the CDMA technology. Verizon, Sprint, AT&T and T-mobile are the wireless service providers that serve most of the population across the country.

There is not much apprehension about T-Mobile getting the iPhone 4S, but fingers remain crossed for the launch of iPhone 5 by the end of summer or the beginning of August. The uncertainties about the features of iPhone 5 (LTE, 64 GB storage and a bigger screen) is also a topic of discussion by wireless service providers.

Samsung is expected to announce its Galaxy S III at an event in London this May this year. It is expected that T-Mobile will bag the position of its official wireless service provider as in the earlier two generations.

The cellphone thefts are on the rise in a number of U.S cities and the criminals involved in black market setups tend to resell these cellphones. The wireless providers and government authorities have revealed that 38% of cellphone burglaries take place in Washington and over 40% in New York City.
D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier was of the opinion that her department is working very hard to resolve this problematic issue. She further added that an operation which took place last month to track down the criminals led to the discovery of a large number of cellphones.
Chris Guttman McCabe of CTIA Wireless Association revealed that "Nearly 90% of U.S. citizens, wireless providers and mobile companies like, Verizon, ATT Inc, Sprint Nextel Corp etc. have shown willingness to be a part of this operation."
